MICHAEL VAN GERWEN continued his brilliant start to 2019 by winning the first Players Championship event of the year in Wigan.
The world number one followed up his triumphs at the World Championship and The Masters by taking the opening ProTour title of the season.
Van Gerwen defeated Jermaine Wattimena in Saturday’s Players Championship One final to extend his unbeaten run to 18 matches, after averaging 109.5 in an 8-4 win.
“I am proud of how I played today, especially in the final,” said three-time World Champion Van Gerwen.
“It’s always a big achievement to win a ProTour because there are 127 players who all want to beat me, there is a huge target on my back.
“I had to work really hard to win this today, you have to be at your best against these players.”
Van Gerwen reached the quarter-finals on Sunday but denied a double success by Jonny Clayton despite hitting a superb nine-darter in the defeat.
