MICHAEL VAN GERWEN produced a game-changing 135 checkout as he recovered from losing the first set to defeat Jamie Hughes 2-1 in the first match of his World Grand Prix title defence attempt.
At one leg each in the deciding set, Hughes kicked off with a 160 followed by 180 before missing a dart at tops to move to the brink of victory – and Van Gerwen stepped in to take out the stunning finish (watch below).
The Dutchman went on to win the match and set up a second round tie against fellow Dutchman Jeffrey de Zwaan.
“I managed to do the right things at the right moments,” said van Gerwen who is chasing a fifth title in Dublin.
“The first round is always tough but now we move into a longer format and I can really try to dominate. I believe I will defend the title, no problem.”
