MICHAEL VAN GERWEN has vowed to ‘put right’ disappointments at the World Matchplay as he bid for a third Blackpool title.

The Dutch star won the prestigious tournament in 2015 and 2016 but lost in the quarter-finals to Phil Taylor two years ago and suffered a shock first round defeat against Jeffrey de Zwaan in 2018.

The world number one also failed to win either of the recent double-header of World Series events but believes he will hit top form at the Winter Gardens.

“I’ve had an excellent year overall but I have no been in my best in the last few tournaments,” admitted van Gerwen.

“I won the World Championship, Masters and Premier League already this year so I think I’m doing okay and I am going to use bad results in the World Series as extra motivation.

“I am determined to win the Matchplay after two years for me in Blackpool that have been a disaster. At the start of the year, this was one of my main targets and I am fully focused on playing my best game because when I do it is very difficult for anybody to beat me.”

Van Gerwen takes on Steve Beaton in the first round on Sunday evening.
