World number one van Gerwen triumphed 7-4 in a hard-fought victory against 2009 champion Wade.
“I wasn’t at my best but to win is the most important thing”, said van Gerwen, who averaged over 100.
“I’m still unbeaten and I’m hoping I can stay that way but I’ll need to improve my game.
“I’m very happy with how the year is going though and sometimes you get more confidence by winning when you don’t play at your best.”
van Gerwen took out 65 on tops to win the first leg before bedding double top again to break.
He then rattled in his first 180 of the night as he moved three legs clear. Another 180 soon followed but Wade’s first maximum followed by a 64 checkout saw him reduce the deficit.
‘Mighty Mike’ pinned double 18 to win the fifth the leg but Wade replied with a brilliant 132 checkout.
‘The Machine’ then took out 84 to break but van Gerwen broke back immediately with the help of his third 180.
The Dutch star pinned tops to move 6-3 ahead before Wade pulled a leg back.
But van Gerwen sealed the win on double ten to extend his unbeaten run to nine.
