van Gerwen followed up last week’s opening night triumph over Kim Huybrechts with another commanding success.
The world number one has now won 26 out of his 27 matches since the World Championship.
“I’m very happy with how I played and I needed to do it because Stephen was fantastic too,” said van Gerwen, who faces reigning World Champion Gary Anderson next week.
“Gary is playing very well but I can do great things as well so I’m sure we will have another cracker in Liverpool.”
van Gerwen pegged double 16 to win the first leg before a 180 helped him break Bunting’s throw.
He made it three-nil before the Liverpudlian pulled a leg back.
The Dutchman restored his three-leg advantage before another maximum and a 38 finish saw him break again and move four legs clear.
Bunting broke back before pinning double twelve to reduce van Gerwen’s lead to 5-3.
‘Mighty Mike’ responded by hitting his third 180 and bedding tops to ensure he would be leaving Bournemouth with at least a point.
And he secured all three in style as he added a fourth maximum before checking out 138 to earn the victory.
