van Gerwen capitalised on Phil Taylor’s earlier defeat against Peter Wright by producing a dominant display to exact revenge for his opening night loss against Wade back in February.
The world number one, who faces Taylor in a potential fight for first place in Rotterdam in a fortnight, also confirmed his place in the Play-offs with the win, in which he averaged over 108.
“”I think I played really well and it’s great to be back on top of the table,” said van Gerwen, who is ahead of Taylor on leg difference.
“Any shot James gave me tonight I took out and it was a good average so I’m really pleased with this.
“It puts the pressure back on Phil again. He made a mistake when he lost but you always want to be top of the table. I had to do really well to catch Phil and I took advantage, and I hope I can hold this position now.”
van Gerwen faces fellow Dutchman Raymond van Barneveld in Manchester next week.
