Michael van Gerwen took victory in his opening group game at the Grand Slam of Darts, defeating Steve Beaton 5-2 in Wolverhampton.
‘Mighty Mike’ posted an impressive 103.42 average in the victory, which left the Dutchman delighted.
“To win the first game is very hard and also very important,” said van Gerwen, who will face Robert Thornton tomorrow evening.
“It takes a bit of pressure off for the weekend so I am very happy to get the win.
“I’m looking forward to tomorrow night. Both Robert and I are fast players and it is always a good game between us.”
van Gerwen hit double 13 to grab an early break of throw, before his first 180 helped him double his lead.
Beaton hit double eight to get off the mark but ‘Mighty Mike’ restored his two leg lead, when he posted double 18 after his second maximum.
Beaton hit back again, this time taking out 80, before van Gerwen moved within a leg of victory, pinning double twelve for a 78 finish.
The Dutch ace sealed the win on tops to take the two points.
