Michael van Gerwen moved to the top of the McCoy’s Premier League with a fine 7-3 victory against Simon Whitlock in Brighton on Thursday night.
The Dutch ace, who has just moved up to second in the PDC Order of Merit, averaged over 102 as he claimed the fifth victory of his debut season.
van Gerwen bounced back from last week’s defeat against James Wade, who he is know tied with on twelve points, to lead the race for the play-offs.
“I think I played a very solid game and I did very well,” van Gerwen told www.pdc.tv
“I expected to play a better Simon but it was hard for him tonight because he had the pressure off him of qualifying for the rest of the Premier League.
“I’m top of the table and I’m very proud of that, but I want to stay there and that will be very hard because we have seven games to go, and I’ll try to win them all.”
van Gerwen bedded double twelve to win the opening leg and he took out 64 for an early break of throw.
‘Mighty Mike’ slotted in his first maximum in the third leg, which he won on double eight.
Whitlock pinned double four to pull a leg back before scoring his first maximum, to which van Gerwen replied with his second before pegging double eight to restore a three leg lead.
The world number two grabbed another break of throw to go 5-1 in front before ensuring at least a draw on double twelve.
Whitlock took out a sensational 130 finish on the bull to pull a leg back and followed it with a neat 90 checkout for a break of throw.
The Australian then went off with a 180 but van Gerwen sealed victory by clinically taking out 64.
