The Dutch ace defeated Dave Chisnall 10-5 on Sunday afternoon, posting an enormous 111 three-dart average.
van Gerwen, who sealed the triumph with a spectacular 140 finish, will take on Raymond van Barneveld or Peter Wright in tonight’s semi-finals.
“It was a fantastic game and I’m very glad I was the winner,” said ‘Mighty Mike, who hit seven 180s in his last eight triumph.
“I’m very happy with my performance and I want to win this tournament. I haven’t won this before and now I’m in the semi-final.
“I’m in the form to go all the way and I want to do that. Nothing else counts but there is a lot of work to do and you don’t get given trophies for free.”
Chisnall opened the match with a maximum before taking out 98. van Gerwen responded with his first 180 and a clinical 89 finish for an eleven-darter before breaking his opponent’s throw.
The next two legs were shared, giving van Gerwen a 3-2 lead.
The Dutchman then took three straight legs in a mini surge of dominance but ‘Chizzy’ reduced his lead to 6-3 before brilliantly taking out 121 on the bull to cut the deficit to two legs.
Chisnall then pegged double three to win the 11th leg before van Gerwen made it 7-5 by landing double four.
The world number one opened the following leg with his sixth 180 and completed it by taking out 58 to break.
His seventh maximum helped him move 9-5 in front and he completed the victory in style with a sensational 140 checkout.
