van Gerwen, who admitted he had been under the weather in recent weeks, stormed to victory, defeating Peter Wright in the final on Easter Monday.

The world number one continued his amazing start to 2016 with a seventh title of the year.

The Dutch sensation had seen off Rene Eidams – in a repeat of their epic World Championship tussle – and Kevin Painter before defying a brilliant performance from Chris Dobey to win 6-5 with a 108 average.

He then defeated Joe Cullen 6-1 to set up a decider against Wright, who he had defeated in the UK Open final earlier in the month.

van Gerwen enjoyed a 6-4 victory in the final to wrap up a second triumph in as many European Tour events this year.

“This is fantastic win for me,” said van Gerwen who also currently leads the pack in the Premier League.

“To be honest I’ve been feeling pretty unwell recently and it has affected my performances in the Premier League so to come here and win at not my best makes me feel a little better.”

van Gerwen returns to Premier League action on Thursday when he meets Raymond van Barneveld in Cardiff.
