MICHAEL VAN GERWEN produced a stunning performance to reach the semi-finals of the World Grand Prix as he saw off Simon Whitlock in a memorable match in Dublin.
Two-time champion van Gerwen, who has reached the final in three of the last four years, averaged a mightily impressive 103 in the double-start format to set up a last four clash with Dave Chisnall.
Whitlock pushed the world number one hard and only missed one dart at a finishing double in the entire match but van Gerwen found another gear as he closed out a 3-1 win.
“I’m really pleased with my performance,” said van Gerwen, who had defeated Steve Beaton and James Wilson in previous rounds.
“Simon played a really good game and I had to produce something better. I think it was the best game of the tournament so far.
“He threw everything at me but I had the answers and it gives me great confidence to hopefully go on and win this tournament but I know I will need to play the same to do that.”
