MICHAEL VAN GERWEN is determined to extend his excellent run at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens by winning the World Matchplay for a third consecutive year.
The world number one was beaten in the final by Phil Taylor in 2014 but bounced back by beating James Wade to win the prestigious tournament a year later, before getting revenge on Taylor in the final 12 months ago.
“I want to dominate all the big tournaments and winning this for the third time in a row would show that I can do that,” said the World Champion, who will begin his campaign against Stephen Bunting on Monday evening.
“It is one of the hardest tournaments to win but one that really shows who is the best and at the top of their game because it is a longer format.
“I have some great memories here and I want to make some more. Also, because, I am not playing in the next tournaments while we have our first child – I need to make sure I win before my small break.”
