MICHAEL VAN GERWEN enjoyed double success in Barnsley at the weekend as the world number took victory in each of the first two Players Championship events of the year.
Van Gerwen, who had already won the Masters and two UK Open Qualifiers in 2018, continued his winning streak with back-to-back tournament triumphs.
The two-time World Champion defeated James Wade in Saturday’s final before seeing off Corey Cadby in the decider on Sunday to scoop £20,000 in prize money for his weekend’s work.
“I’m really happy with what I achieved this weekend and so far this year,” said the Dutchman who has won five out of the six completed tournaments he has entered in 2018.
“I didn’t play my best at times but I always had enough to win and that is a good sign. Now I need to rest and prepare for the Premier League and UK Open.”
Van Gerwen will next be in action when the Premier League visits Germany for the first time on Thursday. He faces Daryl Gurney in Berlin.
