Michael van Gerwen picked up an incredible 20th European Tour title with victory at the European Darts Trophy in Gottingen on Sunday.
The world number one defeated Rob Cross 6-4 in the final, following up dominant victories against Zoran Lerchbacher, Stephen Bunting, Joe Cullen and Simon Whitlock, to win the £25,000 first prize.
The triumph was Van Gerwen’s sixth on this year’s European Tour, securing his place as the number on seed at the Unibet European Championship later this month.
“I’m very happy to have won this tournament and I felt great all weekend,” said Van Gerwen, who produced finishes of 100, 150 and 160 in the final.
“I decided to take a holiday after losing in Dublin and it paid off. I feel refreshed and ready for the big part of the season – that started with winning this tournament.
“Rob has had a great season but I always feel confident against whoever I play and they know it is a different game against me. I pulled out some big shots at the right times and that is why I won the final.”
