MICHAEL VAN GERWEN is ‘even more motivated’ to defend his title at the upcoming World Grand Prix after bitter disappointment at the weekend’s Champions League of Darts.
The world number one was eliminated from the Cardiff event at the group stage following defeats at the hands of Raymond van Barneveld and Phil Taylor.
Van Gerwen did beat Adrian Lewis but his 10-9 loss to to Taylor sealed his fate as Mensur Suljovic went on take the title.
Van Gerwen said: “I didn’t play my best all weekend and I will put that right ready for Dublin.
“The Champions League wasn’t good for me but there is no point looking back. I can only look forward and I’m even more motivated to win the title in Dublin.
“I have great memories in the World Grand Prix. It was my first PDC major in 2012 and I have won it three times. I’m going to do my best to make it four.”
