MICHAEL VAN GERWEN was unable to complete a hat-trick of BetVictor World Matchplay triumphs as he lost out to Phil Taylor, who went on to win the prestigious tournament for an incredible 16th time.
World number one Van Gerwen was beaten 16-6 by Taylor in Friday’s quarter-finals, with the 16-time World Champion going on to defeat Adrian Lewis and Peter Wright in the following days to clinch the title.
“It felt like torture,” admitted world number one Van Gerwen, following his defeat.
“I kept missing and Phil kept hitting and there is no other reason than that for this loss. I am not going to make excuses. I needed to do better.
“Phil has always been and will always be the most dangerous opponent out there and he has done something really special to win this tournament. He deserves a lot of credit for that.”
Van Gerwen is taking August off to focus on the imminent birth of his first child.
He said: “Not winning that game and tournament hurts me, of course it does but I have got something more important around the corner and my wife and I are really looking forward to becoming parents.”
