Van Gerwen Progresses at Grand Slam

MVG thrashes Murnan to reach last 16

Michael Van Gerwen

MICHAEL VAN GERWEN remains on course to win a fourth consecutive bwin Grand Slam of Darts title after sealing his place in the knockout phase with a dominant win on Tuesday evening.

Dutch star van Gerwen defeated Joe Murnan 5-1 in Wolverhampton to set up a tasty last 16 meeting with Michael Smith in a repeat of May’s Unibet Premier League final, which van Gerwen won.

The world number one defeated Gary Robson 5-1 in his opening group game but was beaten by Jonny Clayton in an incredible match on Sunday, which the Welshman won 5-4.

Van Gerwen’s victory over Murnan saw the Dutchman finish in second spot in Group A.

“It wasn’t an outstanding performance but I won the game and that’s all that counts, whereas the other day I played a phenomenal game and lost,” said Van Gerwen after Tuesday’s success.

“It would be nice to win this tournament again but there is a long way to go yet and it’s going to be tough to beat the top players who are still left in.”
