Michael van Gerwen produced another champagne performance as he moved to the summit of the Premier League table with a stunning victory against previously unbeaten Peter Wright in Exeter on night five.
The world number one followed last week’s record-breaking display, in which he produced the highest ever average in a televised game of darts (123.4), with another dominant success as he triumphed 7-2 with an average of almost 117 on Thursday evening.
Wright himself averaged 109 and successfully pinned doubles on the two occasions he was given the chance to throw at them but a ten, 11 and three 12-dart legs helped van Gerwen storm to glory and leapfrog his opponent to the top of the league.
“It was another fantastic performance from myself,” said van Gerwen. “I couldn’t ask for anything more, to get two points and a good result against Peter because he played well too.
“I’m full of confidence and I’m really focused at the moment, and to play as well two times in a row is fantastic.
“The hard work has paid off in the last two weeks and I’ll try to do even better next week and I hope I can produce another game like this.”
Dutch phenomenon van Gerwen is competing in Minehead this weekend as he bids to return the UK Open title he first one 12 months ago, defeating Wright in the final.
The tournament is live on ITV4 from Friday 4 – Sunday 6 March.
