Van Gerwen Denied Final Place After Dramatic Cross Clash

William Hill World Darts Championship Semi-Final

Michael Van Gerwen

MICHAEL VAN GERWEN’s second reign as World Darts Champion was ended by Rob Cross in an amazing semi-final battle at London’s Alexandra Palace.

The pair provided incredible Saturday night entertainment as they fought to meet Phil Taylor in the final on New Year’s Day, but it was Cross who got over the line after Van Gerwen squandered six match darts to progress.

The epic contest went all the way to and eleventh and deciding set, where a tie-break and last-leg shoot-out were needed to determine the outcome.

World number one Van Gerwen missed five darts a double to avoid the sudden-death leg and a further match-dart in the decider – and he could only watch as World Championship debutant Cross punished and booked his place in the final.
