MICHAEL VAN GERWEN missed out on clinching a fourth Dubai Darts Masters title after Gary Anderson defeated the Dutchman in a final of immense quality on Thursday.
Van Gerwen had breezed past Raymond van Barneveld and Gerwyn Price to reach the decider of the unique outdoor tournament for the fifth consecutive year.
But world number two Anderson made it back-to-back titles in the World Series event, claiming an 11-7 win in an incredible match as both players averaged over 110.
“I did everything but it wasn’t enough so all the credit goes to Gary,” said Van Gerwen, the reigning World Champion.
“There is only Gary and myself that could play at this level against each other right now in a final and, although I’m upset to lose, I’m pleased we played this kind of special game for the crowd and everyone watching at home.
“I’ll have a week off and prepare for the World Cup and when we next meet I will make sure it is my turn to win.”
