van Gerwen Chasing First Gibraltar Win

MICHAEL VAN GERWEN has set his sights on claiming victory in the Gibraltar Darts Trophy later this month, after continuing his great run of success by winning the World Cup of Darts.

The 25-year-old Dutch star has followed up January’s World Championship victory and his rise to number one in the world rankings by partnering Raymond van Barneveld to victory in the World Cup pairs event in Germany last weekend.

van Gerwen will top the bill alongside Phil Taylor when the stars of the sport travel to compete in the Gibraltar Darts Trophy from June 27-29 at the Victoria Stadium.

The £100,000 European Tour event, which will be streamed online worldwide, features 48 players and was won last year by Taylor – but van Gerwen is hoping that he can claim a first ever win on the Rock.

“I’m having a great year so far and I want to keep this going now,” said van Gerwen. “I’ve never won a tournament yet in Gibraltar so it would be fantastic for me to win the Gibraltar Darts Trophy.

“I first played in Gibraltar in 2007 and I’ve always enjoyed going there, but I’ve not had much success in the tournaments. Last year I lost 6-5 to Adrian Lewis in the quarter-finals but hopefully I can go all the way this time.

“I’m feeling confident at the moment and my form is great after winning in Dubai and in the World Cup with Raymond, so I want to do well in Gibraltar too.”

van Gerwen will be the number one seed for the Gibraltar Darts Trophy, which will begin on Friday June 27 at the Victoria Stadium.

The tournament continues on Saturday June 28 and Sunday June 29, with the darts action followed by games from football’s World Cup being shown live on big screens inside the Victoria Stadium.
