van Gerwen Braced for Clash of Dutch Titans

On-song Michael van Gerwen is relishing taking on fellow Dutch master Raymond van Barneveld as the Premier League bandwagon rolls into Scotland.

World number one van Gerwen has won each of his three Premier League matches so far this season and enjoyed a further boost with victory in the final UK Open qualifier in Wigan last weekend.

That means the 24-year-old World Champion is full of confidence as he heads to the Hydro Arena in Glasgow and is full of anticipation at taking on van Barneveld, his fellow countryman and five-times World Champion.

“It’s always an exciting time for me when I play Raymond,” said van Gerwen.

“Like everyone in Holland, I have a lot of respect for what he has achieved in the game and he has already shown in the Premier League what he is capable of.

“I’m feeling great about my game at the moment but I know I’m going to have to produce another strong display if I’m going to beat Raymond.”

Victories over Phil Taylor, Robert Thornton and Dave Chisnall have ensured van Gerwen has got his Premier League campaign off to a sensational start.

But he is aware that any slip will be heavily punished considering the quality of the 10-man Premier League field.

van Gerwen added: “When you are playing the best in the world, you have to keep your concentration at all times.

“Momentum is crucial in the Premier League. I have it at the moment and it’s vital that I keep it because the standard is so high.”

van Gerwen’s fellow Premier League star Simon Whitlock and former world champion Mark Webster are also sponsored by Leyland Paints, forming a star-studded ‘Team Leyland’ for 2014.
