BRILLIANT MICHAEL VAN GERWEN was glorious again as he defended his Players Championship crown with an 11-3 final win over Dave Chisnall.

The dominant Dutchman took his tournament win tally to an incredible 25, eclipsing the record previously held by Phil Taylor.

The world number one had to fight back from 6-0 down to win his semi-final against Darren Webster before producing another stunning display against Chisnall to take the title at Minehead for the third time in four years.

“It’s an amazing feeling for me and I’m a happy man,” said van Gerwen. “It wasn’t easy for me today and I had to work really hard, but I’m really glad that I won this trophy again.

“Darren gave me a scare and Dave had a chance to make it three-all, and Dave’s a dangerous player but I punished him when he let me in.

“Going into the World Championship this is a big confidence boost for me. What I’ve done this year is phenomenal and I’m really proud of myself because nobody has won as many tournaments as this before.”

van Gerwen began his title defence with wins against Andy Hamilton and Vincent van der Voort before seeing off Josh Payne to reach the quarter-finals.

There he produced a sublime display against Raymond van Barneveld and then rallied back to beat Webster before clinching victory with a comprehensive win against Chisnall.
