Michael van Gerwen claimed a 7-5 win against Gary Anderson in front of a record 11,000-strong Premier League Darts crowd in Leeds.
The world number one and defending champion won the last two legs to take victory in a tight encounter against Scotland’s Anderson at the First Direct Arena on Thursday.
World Champion van Gerwen averaged over 102 in the victory, hitting a hat-trick of three-figure checkouts along the way, as he returned to the top of the table.
“I did it at the right time by playing my best darts at the end of the game,” said van Gerwen, who faces Peter Wright in Dublin next week.
“I had to work very hard for that win so I’m very pleased with it, especially to do it here at such a fantastic venue. It has been an incredible night. It’s the first time we’ve been to Leeds and the crowd were absolutely fantastic.
“I hope to carry on this form now and it is a target of mine to finish top of the table so it is a big game next week.”
The first four legs were shared before van Gerwen took out 112 to break, only to see his opponent return the favour immediately by cleaning up 76.
Anderson then pegged double two to edge back ahead but van Gerwen’s third 180 helped him make it four legs apiece.
Anderson moved in front again by pinning double ten but a brilliant 121 checkout on the bull sparked a trademark surge from ‘Mighty Mike’, as he followed it with a timely break of throw before snatching victory with a fabulous eleven-dart leg.
