PREMIER LEAGUE DARTS Champion Michael van Gerwen began his title defence with a 6-6 draw against Gary Anderson on the first night of this year’s tournament in Newcastle on Thursday.
Van Gerwen won the crucial twelfth leg to extend his unbeaten run to 33 matches, taking out 68 to secure a share of the spoils in front of a 7,000-strong crowd.
“Of course I’m disappointed with the draw, but I think I was the better player,” said Van Gerwen, who had defeated in Anderson in both the World Championship final and Masters final last month.
“Gary’s finishing was very good at the right moments and I have a lot of respect for that, but I think I have more in me and I didn’t really show it. It was a good game but next week I want to get two points.”
Van Gerwen takes on Peter Wright in Nottingham next Thursday.
