Michael van Gerwen secured a sensational victory on the opening night of the 2014 Premier League as he completed an incredible whitewash win over Phil Taylor.
The new World Champion and world number one stamped his authority as he began his Premier League title defence with a 7-0 win against the man who had previously held all three of those titles.
van Gerwen fired in a 109.59 average and hit seven of his nine attempts at doubles to inflict heavy punishment on ‘The Power’ at Liverpool’s Echo Arena.
“That felt very good,” said van Gerwen after condemning Taylor to his first ever Premier League whitewash defeat.
“Phil wasn’t at his best but I have seen him play worse than that and I think I deserve the credit for that win.
“I played very well under a lot of pressure and it gives me great confidence for the rest of this tournament.
“When you are number one you have to prove it every time you play and I felt like I did that tonight.”
van Gerwen began his rampage by breaking Taylor’s throw in the opening leg before taking out a brilliant 121 finish on the bull.
His first of two 180s came in the third leg, where he broke again and he raced into a four-leg lead with a 64 checkout.
The Dutch star took out 81 to take another leg against the throw before closing out the match by pegging tops in the next two legs, completing only the fourth whitewash win in Premier League history.
‘Mighty Mike’ faces Robert Thornton next week in Bournemouth.
