Michael van Gerwen missed out on his second and the Netherlands’ third World Cup of Darts triumph after being edged out by England in Sunday’s final in Frankfurt.
Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis claimed a dramatic 3-2 victory over van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld in the decider.
The Dutch pair had seen off Russia, the Philippines, Australia and Belgium to reach the final, where they opened up a 2-1 lead.
After van Gerwen had been defeated 4-3 by Taylor, van Barneveld beat Lewis to level before the Netherlands won the pairs match to move within one win of the title.
However, England took the next two singles ties to retain the trophy.
