MICHAEL VAN GERWEN 10 – 8 Phil Taylor

Michael van Gerwen finished off a dream debut season in the McCoy’s Premier League in sensational style by defeating Phil Taylor in a brilliant final at London’s O2 arena.

The 24-year-old Dutchman took out a fabulous 132 finish on the bull to seal a 10-8 success against the six-time and defending champion.

And van Gerwen hailed his second PDC major title as his greatest ever triumph.

“This means everything to me,” said ‘Mighty Mike’, who also won the World Grand Prix last October.

“Phil doesn’t lose very often but tonight it was his turn to lose an my turn to win.

“The break helped me. I was 5-2 down and didn’t feel under any pressure from then on.

“I think I deserved this win and it is by far and away the best moment of my career.”

van Gerwen took the first leg in 13 darts but missed a dart at double seven complete a 134 combination finish, allowing Taylor to level.

‘The Power’ pinched the first break of throw when he followed a 180 by pegging double eight.

He then pinned tops to go two legs ahead but van Gerwen levelled with a clinical 66 checkout.

Taylor increased his lead to 5-2 by taking the next two legs but the Dutch ace grabbed a crucial break of throw, pegging double eight to reduce the deficit to two.

And he moved within a leg of his opponent when the 16-time World Champion missed two darts to break before ‘Mighty Mike’ hit double ten.

Back to back 180s from the Dutch ace helped him draw level as he punished Taylor for three missed darts at double top.

‘The Power’ missed a dart at double eight to complete a 136 finish before van Gerwen bedded double five to move ahead, in a leg which included his fifth maximum.

The world number two made it five legs on the spin when he took out 65 to break Taylor’s throw.

He followed that with his sixth 180 but couldn’t stop Taylor breaking back.

The world number one then produced a stunning 160 finish to restore parity at seven legs apiece.

van Gerwen edged ahead again on double top and he punished ‘The Power’ for a missed dart to level by bedding tops again to break.

‘Mighty Mike’, throwing for the title, started slowly in the 17th leg but followed a Taylor 174 with his ninth 180.

However, the Dutchman missed two darts at double eight for the win before Taylor broke to pull the score back to 9-8.

He finally sealed the victory in typically spectacular style, taking out a roof-raising 132 finish on the bull.

van Gerwen added: “It makes it even more special to win it like that and I was so happy.

“It was a huge moment for me and I hope there will be many more moments like this.”
