DEFENDING GRAND SLAM OF DARTS CHAMPION MICHAEL VAN GERWEN believes he will improve with every match in Wolverhampton after he admitted that he under-performed in his opening match on Saturday evening.

van Gerwen defeated three-time BDO World Champion Martin Adams 5-2 but conceded he fell below his usual high standard of play.

But the Dutchman claims he knows exactly which aspect of his game he wants to improve when he faces Brendan Dolan on Sunday night.

“Maybe there was bit of a loss of focus and that was a mistake,” said van Gerwen, who has won every TV ranking title so far this season.

“Martin is not the player he was a couple of years ago and he is a nice man and is having fun at this stage of his career.

“It was a mistake I could afford and sometimes you can learn more from poor performances. Concentration will be on against Brendan tonight.

“The most important thing was to win and I think in a tournament like this you need to get better and better with every match. I will do that. First I need to win the group and then when I go into the longer format in the knockouts, that suits me better.”
