MICHAEL VAN GERWEN avoided a shock first round exit with an impressive comeback victory against Simon Whitlock at the European Darts Championship in Belgium on Friday.
The world number one was punished by his Australian opponent for an uncharacteristic run of missed doubles early in their clash as Whitlock led 4-2 and 5-3 in the race to six legs.
Whitlock, who had taken out 170 earlier in the match, also missed a dart at double 15 for what would’ve been a match-winning 150 finish after van Gerwen had forced a decider.
The Dutch ace, who is chasing a third straight European Championship glory, completed the fightback though and will take on Gerwyn Price on Saturday.
Phew! That was a close one. I made it difficult for myself by missing lots of doubles and Simon put me under pressure too. It was always going to be a tough game and I’m pleased to get through and move on to a longer format tomorrow, which I think suits me better. I play Gerwyn Price tomorrow evening. Hope you can watch. Thanks for your support.
