European Darts Championship: van Gerwen Races Past Reyes

Michael van Gerwen claimed a comfortable victory against Spain’s Cristo Reyes to book his place in the final day of the European Champion in Belgium, where he is bidding to defend his title.

The world number one moved into Sunday’s quarter-finals with a 10-3 triumph, averaging over 107 in the process.

“I’m very happy with my game at the moment,” said van Gerwen, who faces Dave Chisnall in the last eight.

“I know I have got more in the tank and I hope I will find it and win the next match and the tournament,.

“Cristo has done very well for his first year in the PDC and I knew I could not underestimate his talent.

“I got the job done and I’m looking forward to the final day. I really want to get my hands on the trophy again.”

van Gerwen dominated early on, taking a commanding 4-1 lead and he went on to increase that advantage to 7-3 with Reyes taking out 83, 96 and 88 for those three legs.

van Gerwen fired in his fifth 180 to help him complete a 10-dart-leg as he moved five clear.

He followed that with an 11-darter before landing double eight for the win.
